Whole Foods Plants a Footprint in Revitalized, Downtown Newark

Remember Hayne and Company? Not the one in Montclair. The one on Broad Street in Newark. My evil mother used to drag me there shopping when I would rather have been flipping baseball cards in front of my house on Walnut Street in nearby Nutley.

Now that once derelict, 500,000 square foot building building has been completely transformed into something I can more fully appreciate. As reported in the Business Wire: “The restored building features an arts and cultural center operated by Rutgers University-Newark and around 75,000 square feet of new retail space on Broad Street, including Newark’s first Whole Foods.” In addition there both market rate and affordable residential housing, all under one glorious roof.

This is Newark. This is Essex County. This is something of which we can be very proud.
